To Kill a Mockingbird ch. 17 and 18

Atticus displayed skill during the trial. He remained calm and polite. Yet, at the same time, Atticus was clever. He indirectly made Mr. Ewell expose things he was trying to hide like being left handed and his true thoughts about the African Americans.

Atticus was compassionate toward Mayella. He was doing his job but he felt bad for her, her condition, and because of the likely truth of her attack. In the book it said his stomach hurt even though he had really accomplished what he meant to. That is because the truth was sad for Mayella.

Atticus just seemed to be able to read the character and true feelings of people, especially those in contrast to upstanding character like that of his own.

  1. I agree with you and I found your view on it interesting, I liked that you didn't use any "I think" or "In my opinion" phrases in your writing. Overall I think you did a very good job for your first time.

  2. I thought you did a really nice job of expressing the feelings of the characters which could help people understand the scene better.

  3. You had a really different view on the book. I hadn't thought of that before. I think you did well at balancing your response. Though it could have been more helpful if you had an author's note. Great job!

  4. I don't know if it was your main focus of the piece but I really liked how much of your opinion you showed and how much of your voice you used. I look forward to reading more of your responses. I found this piece very interesting, great job!

  5. Your content here is quite good; it reflects a real understanding of the text, and the way the characters are interacting. Don't forget to take your time getting into the subject of your piece whenever you write. There should be a more solid, dedicated introduction that gives the reader an idea of exactly what you are going to try to cover.

  6. I really like your intro, it seems very story-like, which is cool. I love how much voice is put in through your opinion. I love the different ways you looked at it, both the Ewells, and Atticus. Great job!
